Caregiving: My Heart Sees Your Heart; Discovering The Joys And Benefits Of Respite

What is respite? Who benefits from respite services? Respite is a break for the caregiver and can improve the general well-being of a loved one, but it is often underutilized. This presentation will focus on respite care services that are currently available at the local, state and national levels. The discussion will help caregivers understand what respite is and how beneficial it can be to those that need and deserve it most. Representatives from various respite programs will discuss the services they offer and individuals that have utilized and benefited from respite services will provide their personal perspective on the benefits or respite.

  • Sherri Blome, Coordinator, Nebraska Lifespan Respite Network
    Sherri Blome Professional Representative
Sherri Blome has been the Respite Coordinator for the Western Area of the Lifespan Respite Network since 2000. She has helped to initiate ongoing programs in her area to enhance respite such as Respite Days and the annual Fun Day. Respite Days is a means of paying for respite by using grant funds for families who otherwise would not qualify for respite or who could benefit for additional respite funds beyond what they are allocated through other programs. The annual Fun Day is an event for children with special needs and their siblings. The event is typically held at either Fort Robinson or Riverside Discovery Center. The kids have a great time while their parents get a few hours of respite from all the children. The event allows siblings to meet other children who may be experiencing many of the feelings they do. In the past few years the respite program in the Western area has grown tremendously. Throughout the 20 plus years Sherri has worked with respite, she has formed some great bonds with families served and many of the agencies who make referrals.
