School Nursing During A Pandemic Part 1: Mental Health Strategies For Children And Families presented by Terri Mathews, PhD, APRN-NP, BCBA-D, Associate Professor, University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing on June 12, 2020.

Objectives: Identify available resources to help keep Nebraska children safe in motor vehicles and prevent injuries

  1. The learner will differentiate between normal stress response and those children and families at risk for mental health challenges as a result of the COVID pandemic.
  2. The learner will be able to identify coping responses and strategies that may be implemented with children and families in the school setting. 
  3. The learner will identify and recommend support systems and referral resources for children and families grieving and in crisis.  

Dr. Mathews is an associate professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing. Dr. Mathews received her bachelor's degree in nursing from University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE; her master’s degree in nursing from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and her doctoral degree in Developmental and Child Psychology from the University of Kansas. Dr. Mathews clinical specialty is child and adolescent psychiatric mental health nursing. She is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and a Licensed Psychologist. Dr. Mathews provides clinical service to children in the Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics clinic at the Munroe Meyer Institute. Early in her career, Dr. Mathews served as a school nurse for multiple schools in Omaha.
