School Health Updates - Injury Prevention Resources for Schools

Injury Prevention Resources for Schools presented by Jeanne Bietz and Jason Kerkman, DHHS Injury Prevention Program on April 16, 2020.

Objective: Identify available resources to help keep Nebraska children safe in motor vehicles and prevent injuries

Jason Kerkman MPH., has worked for the State of Nebraska for 16 years and with the Department of Health and Human Services in the Injury Prevention Program for the past 10 years. Currently he is the Safe Kids Nebraska coordinator and coordinates the injury prevention efforts of the Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant. In these roles, he administers grants and provides technical assistance to local Safe Kids programs, coordinates activities across the state addressing child passenger safety, including the development and implementation of the Safe Kids Nebraska Child Care Transportation Training. As a Child Passenger Safety Technician he participates in check events, trainings and serves as a community resource for child passenger safety technicians and the community at large. He currently serves on the Safe Kids World Wide President’s Advisory Council

Jeanne Bietz, MA, is the Motor Vehicle Safety Coordinator for the Nebraska Dept. of Health and Human Services Injury Prevention Program. In this role, she coordinates the Drive Smart Nebraska Coalition and Teens in the Driver Seat program fostering partnerships with public and private entities including schools. Along with coordinating the Teens in the Driver Seat program, she works to improve teen driver safety through improvements in graduated driver licensing education and policy. She has been a child passenger instructor for 20 years and conducts courses to certify other child passenger safety technicians in Nebraska as well as participates in community check events.
