Living With Grandparents

Ask any kid: Grandparents rule. They're known worldwide as great companions and often shower their grandchildren with special treats and lots of love. Some kids live far away from their grandparents so they stay in touch by phone, through email, and with letters. Other kids live close to their grandparents, making it easy to visit often. And still other kids - more than 5 million in the United States - live with their grandparents.

Changing Role

Grandparents have unique contributions to offer their grandchildren that could be lost when they assume the role of parents. Grandparents take over the role as parent for various reasons, putting aside their plans for themselves.

Grandparents are "special friends". They are this way because they are not in charge. Child rearing is always a challenge, but having the primary role of parent changes the "specialness" of being a grandparent.
