For years, the Office on Child Abuse and Neglect and its National Clearinghouse on Child Abuse and Neglect Information—now known as Child Welfare Information Gateway—have created an annual Community Resource Packet to support State and local agencies and concerned citizens in promoting public awareness during Child Abuse Prevention Month each April. Previous editions of this packet have described both community strategies and family activities for supporting parents and promoting safe children and healthy families.

20 Tips to Help Prevent Medical Errors in Children

Medical errors are one of the Nation’s leading causes of death and injury. Rates of medication errors and adverse drug events for hospitalized children were comparable to rates for hospitalized adults in a 2001 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. However, the rate for potential adverse drug events was three times higher in children, and substantially higher still for babies in neonatal intensive care units. Studies of medical errors outside the hospital are just getting underway. This fact sheet is intended to help parents help their children avoid medical errors.

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in school-aged children, affecting about 151,000 young people in the United States, or about 1 in every 400 to 500 young people under 20 years of age.
Tips to Prevent Head Lice

Head lice are increasingly common among elementary school children. The following are some tips to helping children remain 'lice-free.'

Communication is essential to keeping lice out of the classroom. Talk to parents/guardians about guarding against head lice and about the appropriate treatment. Do not assume they have heard it before.

Teach children not to share hats, scarves, brushes, combs and hair ornaments with other kids.

Check children often and regularly for lice.
