DHHS Releases New Tools for LIS Outreach

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released new tools and data for outreach to low income Medicare beneficiaries.

The 2007 LIS Outreach Toolkit provides resources for DHHS partners, including federal agencies, national organizations, state units, area agencies and local provider organizations to help Medicare beneficiaries learn about and apply for extra help (the low income subsidy, also known as LIS). With the third annual open enrollment period for Medicare Part D beginning November 15, 2007, CMS is encouraging all partners to take advantage of the new tools and support in statewide and grassroots outreach efforts.

The toolkit can be found on the CMS website and includes materials, links and targeting data. The targeting data includes general low-income population targeting estimates of Part D-eligible Medicare beneficiaries who are not currently receiving prescription drug coverage and may be eligible for extra help based on the median income of where they live. You may click on the U.S. maps to view the estimated number or percent of eligible beneficiaries in any state, county and zip code. To access the targeting maps, outreach best practices, timeline of outreach strategies, links and other extra help outreach resources: http://www.cms.hhs.gov/Partnerships/Toolkits/itemdetail.asp?itemID=CMS1188820

Attached please also find LIS data specific to Nebraska for use in planning your Medicare Part Open Enrollment Outreach Events.
