Making a Bed Out of a Hospital Chair

Author:
These instructions were shared by parents on the CSHCN (Children with Special Health Care Needs) listserv (administered by the University of Florida)...many thanks to them!

Items needed:
  1. exercise mat
  2. home bed pillow
  3. home blanket (biederlack kind works best-very fuzzy and warm)
  4. face sleeping mask...helps to turn down those blaring lights
  5. hospital sheets (at CHOB - Children's Hospital of Buffalo), you have to get these around 4 or 5 p.m. or they will all be squirreled away)
To assemble:
  1. Get the chair to the most vertical position possible.
  2. Plop on the mat
  3. assemble sheets
  4. climb on.....Depending on the chair this is the most tricky part of all....I have on occasion been swallowed up by the chair! Head and knees touching....had to wake my child to have her use the call button...Was sure that the nurses got a big laugh out of that one!
Also like to bring a bag of perks for me...Instant cappuccino, microwave popcorn, something to read...candy for the nurses......I have found that a big box of candy on my child's night stand makes the nurses come in frequently.....Even the really cheap kind works well...Made friend with a lot of cleaning ladies this way...Facilitates care and also makes the stay more enjoyable...

Have often made up care packages like these for friends whose kids are going into the hospital....
