Waiver While Waiting is a benefit available to allow early access to home and community-based services while waiting for Medicaid eligibility. Anyone who is not willing to accept the uncertainty of continuing services or financial responsibility should not use this option.
People who are eligible for the Ages and Disabled Waiver Program may receive waiver services before Medicaid eligibility has been established if: - Health and Human Services Medicaid eligibility worker has reviewed the person’s complete Medicaid application, conducted an intake interview, and indicates that eligibility is likely.
- All Waiver Program eligibility has been met, including development of a safe and cost-effective Plan of Services and Supports.
- Services are needed to avoid admission to a nursing facility. Services are limited to these Waiver Program options –
- Adult Day Health Care
- Home Care Chore
- Home-Delivered Meals
- Independence Skills Training
- Nutrition
- Personal Emergency Response System
- Respite
- Transportation
- Assisted Living
- AL residents must pay an established room and board fee and may later be directed to pay an additional shore of the cost.
- Payments to the AL will be delayed until a Medicaid decision has been made.

Will I have to pay for these services? Possibly. Some people eligible for Medicaid pay a portion of their income toward medical services, including waiver services. If these applies to you, your DHHS workers will tell you how much your share of the cost is. This might be effective for a past month or even earlier, counting the income you are receiving now from Social Security, retirement, etc. |
What is I am not eligible for Medicaid after all? Payment for the services that have been authorized will stop immediately. - You will receive a formal notice form your Medicaid eligibility worker that your Medicaid application has been denied.
- Your waiver services coordinator will contact you by phone or mail to tell you that service payment will stop immediately.
- The Department of Health and Human Services will stop paying for the waiver program services which where authorized.
If you continue to use services, you will be responsible for all costs and arrangements. |
